The final issue of our 4-part series on skincare is Masks & Scrubs. These necessities provide quick repair and only need to be used once or twice a week.
But before we get into that, lets re-cap the most important points from parts 1, 2 & 3 over our last 3 newsletters.
- Cleansing & Toning
- Moisturizing
- Serums & Eyecare
Cleansing and toning should be performed twice daily, morning and night. If your cleanser requires water, make sure it’s luke warm….not hot or cold. And choose gentle, soap free cleansers suitable for your skin type remembering that texture is key. Oilier skins prefer a squeaky clean, so GELS rinsed with water work well. Combination skins want that clean, but not that tightness, so a gentle MOUSSE or LOTION is suitable. Mousse’s work best with water, while lotions can be either tissued off or rinsed with water. Dryer or mature skins often like a soft, silky clean so RICHER LOTION & CREAM CLEANSERS, tissued or rinsed, will supply that comfort. Always follow your cleanser with a toner to remove anything left behind and restore the skins’ PH balance.
After you cleanse and tone, you moisturize. All skins need moisture, including oily skins. Apply moisturizer at least twice a day, again, morning and evening. Always select your moisturizer(s) based on skin type and preferred texture, but look for added bells and whistles such as anti-wrinkle, firming, lightening, or repairing properties……whatever issues you’d like to address. Determine your priorities by looking closely in the mirror AND use your chronological age as a guideline. But remember, you must add extra years to your “skins age” if you’ve experienced significant sun exposure, severe dryness, or unhealthy lifestyle choices. Opt for a daytime moisturizer that will protect and hydrate, while choose a separate nighttime moisturizer that will repair and rejuvenate.
Serums and eyecare are important items in your arsenal too. Remember that serums usually go on the skin before your moisturizer and act as an added barrier of protection imparting key repairing properties. A few drops gently patted on the skin twice daily is like a multi-vitamin boost to your skin. Depending upon need, today’s serums can bind and regulate moisture, contain anti-wrinkle properties, concentrated vitamins and minerals, can lighten, firm, tighten, tone or purify……pretty much anything your skin dishes out. And you may find you want 2 serums, one for day and one for night working on several skin objectives. Prioritize your needs, and look at concentrates that will address your individual concerns best.
When caring for the skin around your eyes, the most important thing to remember is that this area is specific. Only eye care products should be used on the eye. The formulas are more rapidly absorbed and suitable for that delicate, thinner tissue. Not to mention, eye creams are ophthalmological tested. All women 25+ should begin using an eye product faithfully twice a day….and yes…..indefinitely! A small amount applied to the ring fingers…..gently tapped in a circular motion…..around the entire brow bone and under the eye onto the “socket” bone. Not on the lid, and not closely under the eye. Your natural blinking motion will transport your eyecare to where it belongs and you won’t get a filmy residue having applied too much, too closely.
So with all that review, we finally arrive at Part 4 – Masks & Scrubs. These two items are like lipstick and lipliner…..they perform best together, although you can use them separately. The scrub comes first to gently exfoliate dead surface cells, buff and smooth the skin in preparation for the mask to work most effectively. Afterwards, apply the mask or combination of masks and leave on as directed….anywhere from 10 – 20 minutes.
When selecting your scrub, “buyer beware” that not all scrubs are created equal. Less expensive items containing crushed apricots or nuts that are not sphere-shaped can be abrasive and scratch the skin. These are the $5 scrubs you find at the drug store. Instead, spend a little more money (a mid range of $15 – $30) and purchase a scrub with perfectly rounded plastic particles suspended in a gel, cream, or cream/gel. These formulas lift dead surface cells and are designed to roll off the skin more easily. Apply less than the size of a quarter to damp skin, once or twice a week. Massage in gentle, circular motions, paying close attention to areas that harbor skin buildup….the nose, forehead and chin. Rinse with lukewarm water and now you’re ready for a mask.
As with the rest of your skin care, select your mask(s) based on your skin type, needs and priorities too. If your skin is oily, you’ll likely prefer a deep cleansing mask designed to tighten, tone, and purify a congested skin. Often “clay- based”, these masks contain key ingredients like camphor, zinc, or fruit acids which will detoxify, refine, and heal blemished skins. Deep cleansing masks normally “harden” and require water to emulsify and remove. The bonus…..they are great overnight spot treatments when an unexpected blemish occurs.
If your skin is more dry/dehydrated, or mature, replenishing and moisturizing masks are ideal to nourish, repair and rejuvenate parched skin. Creamy in consistency, with little hardening effects, these products infuse moisture and plump skin cells so that fine lines and creppiness are visibly reduced. The skin is left soft, supple, and more radiant. Seek out moisturizing and hydrating masks that contain shea butter, allantoin, or macadamia nut oil, which are emollient, healing, and rich in essential fatty acids. Wheat germ oil or chamomile extracts will soften and soothe, while ginseng, cabbage rose and horsetail extract, are ideal to combat the aging process. Depending on texture, most moisture masks can be either tissued off or rinsed with luke warm water.
Regardless of which mask you choose, in fact, you may find you need to combine a few for individual goals, remember to follow your weekly scrub and mask with your daily toner, your eye cream, your serum, and finally, your moisturizer. In that order.
Once a week, 20 minutes of your time for an at-home maintenance facial, in exchange for a lifetime of youthful, healthy, skin.
